Hi lovers! I’m Lucy, a traveling Bali elopement photographer! If you want to ditch tradition and escape to Bali, read on. This guide is for you. Anyone who has been to Bali will tell you that it is a magical place. It’s tropical, it’s lush, it’s got beaches and mountains and waterfalls and volcanoes and plenty of fried rice. Bali is Pulau Dewata in Indonesian – it means ‘Island of the Gods’. It’s the only Indonesian island with a Hindu-majority. You will see the incredible Hindu temples everyone on this island. From the grand and beautiful temples on lakes and the coast, to small temples by the side of the road – every adventure here is sure to be steeped in culture.

Bali Waterfall Elopement Locations

There are so many waterfalls in Bali, it’d be impossible to name them all. I mean there are hundreds. Steep terrain inland creates these epic sights. I’ve been a fan of waterfalls for as long as I can remember, and this is a waterfall lovers’ paradise. There are steep hikes down wet stairs to reach the big ones. Or lazy jungle strolls that follow the rivers down many drops. You can swim, dive in, or relax on the shores for as long as you want. You definitely should include a waterfall in your bali elopement adventure. Confusingly, many different waterfalls are known by the same names. So it helps to know exactly where you’re going! Waterfall is Air Terjun in Balinese.

Beach Elopement Locations in Bali

When you picture a tropical vacation, I know you’re thinking of the beach. And Bali has epic beaches. Teal blue waters, rocky cliffs, monkeys everywhere and coastal temples enhance the beauty. Imagine sipping drinks of your choice in a cabana on a beach in front of these views. Or better yet – charter a boat to tour the coastline and get married on it! Rice Paddies, Lakes & Volcano Elopement Locations

The Jatiluwih rice paddies are an UNESCO heritage site. This picturesque area has contoured layers of rice paddies that are actively farmed. It’s absolutely beautiful and is a must-visit while you’re on this gorgeous island. You can find rice terraces in much of the central part of the island. The Danau – Indonesian for lakes- are stunning as well. Of the four largest, Beratan, Tamblingan, Buyan and Batur, lake Tamblingan is my favorite. Two prominent volcanic cones dot the island of Bali. Mt. Agung is the highest point and at over 9,000 feet it dominates the skyline from almost anywhere. Mt Batur is an often-climbed volcano with terrain like Nesquick. Hiking it at sunrise is a popular recommendation for tourists, but I’d actually advise against it. There are so many more beautiful places and hikes.

Ubud is known worldwide for its love of Yoga and Yoga teaching. It’s a popular place, and don’t get me wrong, its absolutely beautiful here. However, I did find it a bit american-ized. It was the Boulder of Indonesia. Unless you are into Yoga and the slight veneer of tourism, I’d encourage you to go and experience the real Bali elsewhere. You can definitely find monkeys in other places on the island, without the moral dilemma of feeding/domesticating them.

When to elope in Bali

Like most tropical climates, Bali is very hot and humid. But instead of having a four-season rotation, this area of Indonesia simply has a rainy and a dry season. The dry season is generally from April to October and makes the best time to visit and elope. It’s only mildly less hot, with highs in the mid 80’s every day. In every month, the humidity can be oppressive, especially if you’re planning to hike or adventure. It’s smart to plan to be active early in the morning to stay comfortable for a Bali elopement. I’ve included a handy sample timeline for a dream elopement in Bali at the end of this post!

How to elope in Bali in 2024

Bali is a great place for an elopement. There are resorts in Kuta that may offer elopement packages, but I can’t say I recommend them. What they offer is a one-size fits all couple of hours – when really you’ll want to be spending a day or days exploring the best sights on the island. The best elopements are those that are planned on the most exciting day of your dream honeymoon. So planning a Bali elopement yourself isn’t that hard when you break it down into these steps.

Getting Legally Married in Bali

If you’ve spent any time googling this, you probably know by now that to be legally married in Bali requires a bit of a process. If your country has an embassy, you must first visit its office to obtain a CNI. A CNI is a Certificate of No Impediment – meaning, you’re not already married to someone else. To get this, you’ll need to bring a few identifying documents with you on your trip. Once that’s in hand, there is an additional requirement. Your ceremony must be witnessed by both a legal civil officer and a religious leader. There are five religions that are recognized for marriage in Bali: Hindu, Buddhism, Catholicism, Protestant and Muslim. If you do not fall under these categories, or are looking for an easier path – you may opt to sign the legal documents in your home country before you leave for your trip to Bali.

How much does it cost to elope in Bali?

Flight cost will be your most variable expense. I’ll break down a hypothetical budget for a 2 person Bali elopement here. Your elopement may be cheaper or more expensive depending on your preferences and desires. It is not recommended to rent a car here, because taxi drivers are abundant and friendly. Accommodation is cheap and food is even less, so there are definitely ways to make your elopement in Bali thrifty. And guaranteed it will cost less than a traditional wedding.

A Bali Elopement Timeline

With so many dreamy Bali elopement locations, it could be hard to decide what to do! Use this sample timeline as a starting point. Of course, your dream day might look totally different! Perhaps a helicopter tour of the island, or a sunset cruise. Maybe you’d like to release sea turtle hatchlings on the beach to make your day unforgettable. Perhaps a scuba dive on the USS Liberty wreck would float your boat. Maybe you’d like a delicious cooking class, coffee tasting, or farm tour. I’d love to know what would make your day the best!

6:00 Have your first look on steps of a temple.

What is there to see in Bali?

There is so much to see and do in Bali that it can feel like a large place. The southern tip is full of great beaches, but tons of people. Kuta & Denpasar should be used only as an airport access point and then you should get the heck out of there asap! The north and central parts of the island are home to some of the biggest attractions and mountains. Temples like Besakih & Beratan, Mt. Agung, Jatiluwih, and tons of waterfalls dominate this area. The eastern area is full of small, sleepy, seaside towns with amazing hikes and snorkeling and diving. The remote western half of the island is full of dense jungle and wildlife. So there is definitely something for everyone here!

Where to stay in Bali in 2024?

Once you’ve determined which part of Bali you’ll be eloping and adventuring in, it’s time to book a place to stay! Instead of looking at this as a chore or another to-do on your checklist, I really want you to sit down together with some of your favorite beverages. Bali is an incredibly affordable country to stay in. That means there are insanely cool bungalows, villas, cabins, jungle treehouses and more for half the cost of an American hotel room.
